told me that...
I felt very nervous when I went into his office.
felt nervous 写心理状态;when I went into...
He did not look up from his desk when I entered.
look up from his desk
After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.
after I had sat down 用过去完成时强调坐下先发生;business was very bad 是坏消息铺垫。
He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries.
could not afford to pay 是高频结构;such large salaries 中 such 修饰名词短语。
Twenty people had already left.
I knew that my turn had come.
my turn had come
"Mr. Harmsworth," I said in a weak voice.
in a weak voice
"Don't interrupt," he said.
Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!
an extra thousand pounds a year 表示“每年额外一千镑”。

told me that..., said that..., told me I would receive...

  • She said that she was tired.
  • He told me that the train would be late.

After I had sat down, Twenty people had already left, my turn had come

  • After he had locked the door, he left.
  • They had finished the work before noon.

afford to do / such + 名词短语

could not afford to pay such large salaries

  • We can't afford to waste time.
  • It was such a good film that we watched it twice.

Mr. Harmsworth would see me 和 I would receive ...

  • He said he would come the next day.
  • I knew she would help me.

  • my turn had come
  • 结尾的 extra thousand pounds a year 必须保留,这是整篇 punchline。
