过去完成时表示“先发生”
After I had left... 和 As soon as he had got into the car... 都是在过去叙事中把更早一步完成的动作单独标出来。
相似句：
- After she had finished her work, she went home.
- He had locked the door before he left.
as soon as 引导紧接动作
he had got into the car 和 I said good morning... 之间几乎没有间隔，所以用 as soon as 很自然。

- As soon as I got home, I called my mother.
- As soon as the rain stopped, they went out.
apart from / neither of us
Apart from a few words ... 是否定性补充；Neither of us ... 表示“两个人都不”，句子里不再加 not。

when 表“就在这时”
I had nearly reached the town, when ... 这里的 when 不是单纯“当……时”，而是带突然转折感的“这时却……”。
