I had an amusing experience last year.
去年我有过一次很有趣的经历。
amusing experience 先给全文定下“好笑经历”的基调；had 在这里是一般过去时里的“经历过”。
After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town.
我离开法国南部的一个小村庄后，继续开车去下一个城镇。
after I had left 用过去完成时表示先离开村庄，再继续开车；drive on 表示“继续往前开”。
On the way, a young man waved to me.
途中，一个年轻人向我招手。
on the way 表示“在路上”；wave to sb. 是固定搭配。
I stopped and he asked me for a lift.
我停下车，他请求搭便车。
ask sb. for sth.；a lift 在英式英语里指“搭便车”。
As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language.
他一上车，我就用法语向他道了早安，他也用同样的语言回答我。
as soon as 表“一……就……”；had got into 说明他先上车，我后开口。reply 若接宾语常要加 to，这里 in the same language 作方式状语。
Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all.
除了几个词以外，我根本不会法语。
apart from = except for / except 在这里表示“除……之外”；not ... at all 强调“一点也不会”。
Neither of us spoke during the journey.
旅途中我们俩谁也没有说话。
neither of us 表“两人都不”，后面动词常用单数概念；句中不再出现 not。
I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, "Do you speak English?"
我快到那个镇时，年轻人突然很慢地说：“你会讲英语吗？”
had nearly reached 表示“差一点就到达”；when 在这里带“就在这时”的突然感。
As I soon learnt, he was English himself!
我很快得知，他本人竟然就是英国人！
As I soon learnt = 正如我很快得知的那样；himself 放句尾起强调作用，增强反转效果。

本课写作者在法国搭载一位年轻人，两人一路用法语寒暄却都不擅长法语，直到快到镇上才发现对方竟然是英国人。重点训练过去完成时、as soon as、apart from、neither of us 等结构。

语法点

过去完成时表示“先发生”

After I had left... 和 As soon as he had got into the car... 都是在过去叙事中把更早一步完成的动作单独标出来。

he had got into the car 和 I said good morning... 之间几乎没有间隔，所以用 as soon as 很自然。

Apart from a few words ... 是否定性补充；Neither of us ... 表示“两个人都不”，句子里不再加 not。

when 表“就在这时”

I had nearly reached the town, when ... 这里的 when 不是单纯“当……时”，而是带突然转折感的“这时却……”。

读写提示

  • 反转类小故事要尽量晚一点揭示真相，这课的最后一句就是包袱。
  • 语言误会题材里，沿途沉默和最后一句发问都非常关键，不能压缩没了。
  • apart from a few words 和 neither of us spoke 这两句最能体现笑点铺垫。
  • 复述时最好把“作者也不会法语、年轻人其实也会英语”这两个信息对照说出来。
